To wait or not to wait, how to know which is best for your future
Wait until the right time, then everything will come easily.
Often we may tell ourselves this phrase in one way or another. Whether it relieves the burden of worry, anxiety, or of taking the initiative — this phrase isn’t always helpful.
When we wait & wait…
- To quit our 9–5 to have more time.
- Playing a new instrument but you’re not ready.
- Or even if you’re scared of taking a risk to do something new.
Sure, sometimes doing something really isn’t the right time.
But most of the time “waiting” is only in our head.
Nothing happens overnight
What if you’re going to college? Needing better experience? Or simply just need more time?
It’s one thing to give ourselves excuses for why to wait, but it’s another to have actual reason to.
When I started Medium nearly a year ago, I didn’t like writing. But when I took a few months to transition into my 2nd semester in college and develop the desire to write again, that’s when I gave Medium a second chance.
That chance has paid off, because I’ve gained so much simply from writing daily:
- Discipline to write at the same time.
- Developing ideas & outlines.
- Communication skills.
If I decided the first month on Medium that I would give up — not because I thought it wasn’t possible, but because I thought that waiting would be an excuse, I wouldn’t have given writing a chance at all.
So actually, I could’ve started on Medium at any time, it just had to be when I was open & ready to do it.
Not all things are excuses
We need to understand what our purpose is, why we want to do something, and being patient with ourselves.
It’s a balancing act between taking the initiative & giving things a rest.
